The theatrical styles and conventions used

Star Trek has a deeply interesting visual style, but it must be understood in the context of Minimalism. The discovery of the comedy that is latent gives a highlight to good dialogue and the impression at least of an extra dimension to any writing that might otherwise seem featureless.
